Poem: A Quarter Mile From Glory

A quarter mile from glory
Only to cross into heavens gates
Cheers turning into pure silence
As no one knew of the fate
In a time of celebration
When the flags were flying high
Hearts were aching with emotion
As a hero was bid goodbye
So many lives were changed that evening
As tears were shed across the land
Remembering the car and the man inside
Who drew the crowds into the stand
The number etched into our minds
On the car of black and white
Shall forever be within heart and soul
As our hero fades out of sight
